As the weather heats up, our garden tools come out. But with damp, dirt and pests at play, our equipment may not always emerge as we’d last remembered it. So what can you do to ensure your tools stay in tip-top condition so your garden can always look its best?

#1 Keep it clean

If you want your garden tools to be with you for the long run, you need to ensure you look after them – both when they are and aren’t in use. Cleaning and drying your equipment before storing it will help to prevent rust and other damage occurring and keep your tools ready for some garden work.

It’s also wise to sharpen your tools before storing to ensure they are kept in good condition for when you need them.

Top tip: applying a thin layer of lubricant to metal tools can help to stop rust and corrosion occurring – vegetable oil works great for this!

#2 Stay organised

The sun is shining, the bees are buzzing and your lawn needs mowing – but where are your tools? There’s nothing worse than having your mind set on a task that you can’t complete because the ‘past you’ left your gardening equipment buried under a pile of clutter.

So if you want a stress-free storage solution for your garden tools, you need to get organised sooner rather than later. Some top tips include:

  • Hang your tools to make the most of your space & keep everything tidy (peg boards, hooks and tool racks work great)
  • Categorise tools, seeds and more for easy access (from storing tools in buckets to organising your seeds using a binder)
  • Ensure you know what you’ve got and where you can find it to avoid buying duplicates (categorising and labelling will play a big part in this)

Top tip: hanging your gardening equipment will not only help to save space but can also prevent your tools getting damaged or lost.

#3 Make them secure

Whilst the use of many garden tools may be seasonal, you need to find a way to keep them protected year-round. Cue self-storage…

Finding a secure indoor storage space for your equipment will not only help to ensure they are protected from the elements, but will also prevent theft and ensure any dangerous items are kept away from children and pets.

Top tip: moisture can cause rust and corrosion on metal tools along with damage to wooden handles. Using a dehumidifier in a well insulated space will help to minimise moisture in the air.

Our self-storage units offer full insulation and dehumidifiers to keep your equipment protected against dampness, mould and adverse weather conditions along with ultra-secure unit locks and 24/7 CCTV surveillance to keep unwanted visitors at bay.
